When Should the Springs Be Replaced?

Consider how frequently you open and close your garage door each week. The springs will eventually become worn out from all the up and down motion. How can you tell when to replace them?

Our specialists have compiled the following warning signals for you to look out for:

    1. Broken Springs - This is the most obvious indication that your garage door springs need to be replaced. However, performing a quick visual inspection once a month could help you identify problems before they arise. By replacing the springs before they reach their breaking points, you can lower the likelihood that they will fail. These are some things to look for during those monthly inspections:
    2. Balance Test Fails - Over time, springs lift less and less when they reach the end of their lifespan. By disconnecting the garage door from the opener and manually evaluating the door's balance, you can determine whether the spring's muscle is slipping or holding strong. Signs of unbalanced doors include uneven or slanted position when opening/closing, makes a strange sound when they travel up or down the tracks, takes longer to open or close, and if they do not function properly at all.
    3. Rusting - Significant rust not only indicates that the springs are degrading quickly, but also that your door's system as a whole likely hasn't received the necessary maintenance in a long time.
    4. Spring Coils Showing Signs of Straightening - When you see fewer and fewer coils on your extension spring, it means it's on its last coil. A straight piece in the spring is a definite indicator of spring failure and necessitates prompt repair.
    5. Garage Door Not Opening - A broken garage door spring can cause your garage door opener not to open when you press the button on the opener. In the event that the garage door won't open when you press the button or if you try to open it manually and it will not go up, one or both of the springs may be broken.
    6. Noisy Garage Door - It's normal to hear a noise when opening your garage door. However, a sudden increase in noise could be a sign that it's probably time to change the springs in your garage door. If the sound is a loud thumping, there may be a more serious issue at hand—a broken spring. Replacing a broken spring should be done by experts because it could result injury if done incorrectly.
